Build 50. Front Wing Prep 1
I'm still waiting for the parts to finish off the rear, so I have started to crack on with the front wings. These will need a bit of modification before they can be used on the front wing stays. Caterham will pre drill 3 holes for you, consider these "pilot" holes as they won't be in the right place. So the first thing to do is to get out the side repeaters and work out which holes you will need to modify. The side repeaters are directional so make sure you get them the right way around! In the first picture, the front of the wing stay is to the right of the picture. For sure you will need to widen the central hole, but it may need widening in a specific direction. For this I used a Dremel with the grinding stone bit as that felt like the most controllable one to use.
I also needed to slightly offset the rear holes as well, which is used a normal drill bit for with a bit of "sideways" force.
Once you are happy with the new holes, it is time to apply the trim. The manual asks for this to be done after but for me that is not the right order. I prefer attaching the trim now, knowing that where ever I put the wing, it will not get chipped/broken on the edges. It was also way easier to attach when off, and easier to glue.
For me, I like the trim, and it goes with my Red/Black/White colour scheme, so I will be using superglue and attaching it permanently. Once I had put trim all the way around, (I put the join on the other side to the repeater, just opposite it), I then masking taped it in place. The superglue was applied on the inside, I simply went around the inside rim and peeled back the longer rubber part, bit by bit, and applied a tiny blob of super glue every 2cm. Once this was dry, I removed the masking tape and applied glue to the parts that were inaccessible before.
Once finished, it looked great!
